Fedor Uglov

Born Sept. 22 (Oct. 5), 1904, in the village of Chuguevo, in what is now Irkutsk Oblast. Soviet surgeon. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1967). Member of the CPSU since 1931.

In 1929, Uglov graduated from the medical department of the University of Saratov, where he studied under N. N. Petrov. In 1950 he became head of the subdepartment of hospital surgery of the First Leningrad Medical Institute and, while holding that position, also served as director of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Pulmonology from 1967 to 1972.

Uglov’s work has been concerned primarily with esophageal surgery, portal hypertension, hypothermia in thoracic surgery, and related problems. In 1953, Uglov was one of the first in the USSR to devise surgical methods for treating heart disease, developing several surgical techniques and instruments. In 1961 he was awarded a Lenin Prize for developing surgical methods for the treatment of lung diseases. Uglov has been an editor of the journal Vestnik khirurgii im. 1.1. Grekova (I. I. Grekov Surgical Herald) since 1953. He has been awarded two orders and various medals.
