“I am the most powerful creature in the universe!” boasted the barrel-chested, towering android—Amazo—in the Justice League of America's third appearance, The Brave and the Bold #30 (1960). On individual missions, JLA members the Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter withstand evanescent losses of their superpowers. Their extraordinary abilities are being siphoned by the rogue scientist Professor Ivo to empower his synthetic serf, Amazo. One by one, the dumbstruck Justice Leaguers fall victim to the arrogant automaton who plies their own awesome faculties and weapons against them. Green Lantern's quick thinking enables him to outwit Amazo, who, in a dormant state, is relegated to souvenir status in the League's Secret Sanctuary. The JLA had no choice but to revive Amazo to combat the inexorable alien “I” in Justice League of America #27 (1964). In subsequent reactivations, including several late-1970s skirmishes with Superman, Ivo's upgrades of Amazo's “absorption cells” have made this “One-Man Justice League” virtually unstoppable. Amazo's replication of the might of the League's entire roster, including reservists, in JLA #27 (1999) would have resulted in the deaths of an army of superheroes had Superman not disbanded the team to crash the android's programming. The rogues' gallery of the Cartoon Network's animated Justice League series and its expandedcast continuation, Justice League Unlimited (2004–present), includes a redesigned Amazo voiced by Robert Picardo. Both the television and comics versions of the supervillain have been immortalized as action figures.
