Researchers investigate the impact of sea level rise on loko iʻa, traditional Hawaiian fishponds. In the study, published in the open access journal Remote Sensing MDPI researchers are supporting the restoration of loko iʻa along the Eastern Keaukaha Coastline on Hawai‘i Island by using drone technology to investigate how sea level rise impacts the fishponds. Monitoring the water level at various sites using local in situ water sensors gives those maintaining and managing loko iʻas greater insight into tidal influences and their relation to different loko iʻa types. The researchers hope their work will support the future management of these culturally significant sites, enhancing coastal community adaptation, resilience, and food security in the face of rising sea levels. All articles in Geriatrics MDPI (ISSN: 2308-3417) Vol 9, Issue 3, are now freely available to access, read and download: https://brnw.ch/21wLlxD COVER STORY: Ladder use injury rates vary by age and gender. To provide insight into these discrepancies, research from the University of Utah investigated ladder use ability and behavior of younger and older men and women, quantified from three ladder tasks: changing a lightbulb, clearing a roof gutter, and washing the windows. Experimental findings indicate: older adults require more time to complete ladder tasks; younger adults display riskier ladder use behaviors; men and women display similar ladder use ability; and men are more willing to climb riskier ladders. In addition, older adults reported more frequent ladder use than younger adults and men use straight ladders more frequently than women. These results suggest that the reported higher ladder fall rates by older adults and men are linked to increased ladder use exposure and riskier ladder choice. This knowledge can help guide population-specific interventions to reduce ladder falls. Read more: https://brnw.ch/21wLlxD #mdpi #openaccess #geriatrics #ladderfalls #research

Novel research published in the open access journal Genes MDPI finds that a specific genetic insertion is associated with progressive retinal atrophy in English Shepherds. This autosomal recessive disease results in blindness in dogs and is difficult to treat. The breakthrough article, cited in The Guardian, used whole genome sequencing and gene mapping to identify the sequence of DNA in the FAM161A gene associated with retinal atrophy. The authors suggest that identifying this insertion could help develop genetic screening tests for the disease. These tests could be pivotal in reducing the frequency of progressive retinal atrophy in English Shepherds and the associated blindness.
