We’ve been hard at work since our launch in 2018, striving towards the goal of offering official in-game mod support to players everywhere. With Totally Accurate Battle Simulator recently releasing their Nintendo Switch integration, mod.io became the first service to enable UGC support across every major gaming platform, from PC to console, mobile, and VR.

The reality of cross-platform modding is finally here, with mod.io now able to provide studios with tools for Unity, Unreal and a C++ SDK, featuring mod support for 11+ platforms.

Ever since I started ModDB.com in 2002, I’ve been in awe of modders’ ability to enhance games in unexpected and awesome ways, and made it my mission to expand their reach. Less than two years ago only a handful of early pioneers like Skyrim and Minecraft had managed to expand their vast and vital UGC community beyond PC. Inspired by their efforts, the reality of cross-platform modding is finally here for the rest of the industry, with mod.io now able to provide studios with tools for Unity, Unreal, and a C++ SDK, that features support for 11+ platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux, Xbox Series X|S, PS4®, PS5™, Nintendo Switch, Quest, iOS, and Android. For players of games on console using these tools to unlock UGC, this is a big deal, similar to what I felt 20 years ago; when I was first introduced to the vast and creative world of mods.

Enable Create & Play Mods Everywhere with mod.io

Totally Accurate Battle Simulator enabling mods in-game on the Nintendo Switch is the culmination of all the hard work the ModDB and mod.io teams have put in over the last two decades. There’s no better way for us to wrap up 2022 than by saying mods are officially cross-platform, available on all modern consoles, and across all PC platforms.

We’ve been lucky to have fantastic game studios and publishers to work with along the way. Studios and publishers like Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment enabled us to integrate with games like Snowrunner, to get mods into the hands of PlayStation players across the world. To date, over 165 million mods for Snowrunner have been downloaded.

Over 165 million mods have been downloaded in SnowRunner since cross-platform UGC was added.

The team at Easy Day Studios worked with us on integrating mod.io into SkaterXL via our Unity plugin so their community could create and play mods on Xbox, opening a world of possibilities for those players. In the first 24 hours, mod support was live in SkaterXL, players downloaded over a million pieces of content.

18 thousand #fakeskate outfits, gameplay tweaks, and maps have been created for Skater XL

2022 has been a huge year for UGC & mods in VR, where games like BONELAB and Contractors VR have seen incredible growth. BONELAB cruised past 7.5 million downloads in just over two months, while Contractors sits at over 17 million. Both games remain steadfast in the Quest Store Top 10 Seller list — with reviewers frequently citing mod support as a key feature for players of the games.

In VR, where rapid iteration and experimentation are vital, mod support is frequently cited by players as a key selling point.

And, of course, PC. The birthplace of mods is alive and stronger than ever. We partnered with Weird West from Wolfeye Games and Devolver Digital, ensuring their PC fan base could access mods in-game no matter their PC platform preference; whether it be Steam, GOG.com, or the Epic Games Store. The Weird West community has already created some incredible experiences, even changing the entire game to be played through in first-person perspective.

We have games live on PC Gamepass like Deep Rock Galactic, where players have consumed over 13 million mods, with one of the most creative communities we’ve seen. Our custom Unreal Engine plugin allows studios like Ghost Ship Games to enable mod support for Deep Rock Galactic.

Supporting all PC platforms from Steam to PC Game Pass

Games like Ready or Not from VOID Interactive also integrated with mod.io this year, seeing nearly 2.5 million downloads in their first two months. Creators in the Ready or Not community are even going as far as producing briefing videos for their mods, fully voice acted with accompanying music.

Sometimes when you’re in the middle of something, it can be difficult to see the big picture. Today we’re grateful to take a step back and see what has been achieved here:

Mods everywhere. Every modern console, every PC platform, mobile, and VR — and we’re just getting started with unlocking the full potential of mod support.
