Who are we?

The National Cat Action Taskforce (NCat) was launched in May 2010. It is made up of a small group of volunteers, based in Johannesburg and Pretoria, who are striving to support existing cat-care organisations and individual caregivers in helping cats in need across South Africa. Our ultimate aim is therefore to operate countrywide, and little by little, we are achieving this!

What are our objectives?

We have two main objectives:

Primary objective: To help existing cat-care organisations and individuals countrywide do more of what they are already doing.

In other words, we do not care for cats directly ourselves, but aim rather to help those organisations already doing the work to rescue more cats, feed more cats, sterilise more cats, and home more cats.

We do this by providing them not only with funds - which are distributed carefully and systematically - but also by helping them gain access to resources such as information, veterinary services, traps, and catfood.

Secondary objective: To train and employ - and therefore empower - previously disadvantaged individuals, e.g. as feral trappers.

How does it all work?

We invite two kinds of members to join us:

1. individuals and organisations caring for cats countrywide, as NCat Beneficiaries.
2. people who wish to help us help the Beneficiaries by means of funds and resources, as NCat Feline Friends.

With the help of Feline Friends all over South Africa, we are building up not only funds but a database of resources to help cat-care organisations country-wide in every way we can.

How are funds distributed?

Funds that have been collected, are distributed according to members' needs. In other words, individuals and organisations who need more because they do more, receive a larger portion of whatever we are able to distribute in any given month.

If feasible, independent observers will be asked to visit new Beneficiaries to provide objective confirmation of the work being done.

In addition, NCat raises funds for particular projects, such as specific spayathons, in various parts of the country. Projects such as these are initiated either by one of our Beneficiaries or by a caring member of the public.

How are resources distributed?

We have begun a database of information on all resources, eg cat traps, vets prepared to sterilise at reduced rates, catfood available at reduced rates, etc. Please see our "Database" page, or contact us if you need information on any cat-related subject that is not covered on that page, and we will try to help you ourselves or to put you in touch with someone who can.
